What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is an STD caused by a bacterial infection. It’s very common, affecting as many as 3 million people in the United States every year. The good news is that chlamydia is easily treated.

You contract chlamydia through vaginal, oral, or anal intercourse with a person who has the infection. The infection can occur in your vagina or mouth.

If you’ve had chlamydia in the past, you can become reinfected if you have unprotected sex with someone who has the STD. If you’re pregnant, you can also pass the infection to your baby through the birth canal.

What are the symptoms of chlamydia?

Chlamydia doesn’t always cause symptoms. The only way to know if you’ve contracted the bacterial infection is to get tested.

If you do develop symptoms, they may occur several weeks after you’ve contracted the bacterial infection. Common chlamydia symptoms include:

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Pain during urination
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Painful intercourse
  • Lower abdominal pain

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, contact Rebirth OB/GYN to schedule an STD test.

What tests diagnose chlamydia?

Dr. Luikenaar can determine if you have chlamydia through a urine test or from a sample of your vaginal secretions. The body fluid samples are sent out for testing and may take a few days to get the results.

Because chlamydia can look like other STDs, Dr. Luikenaar may also test for other infections.

What is the treatment for chlamydia?

Dr. Luikenaar can treat your chlamydia with antibiotics. She offers treatment for both you and all the partners involved. To ensure a full recovery, Dr. Luikenaar emphasizes that you take the antibiotic as directed, even if your symptoms improve soon after starting treatment.

She also provides instructions on when it’s safe for you to have sex again. You may need to wait up to seven days from the start of your treatment until you can resume your intimate relationship.

If left untreated, the bacterial infection can invade your ovaries and fallopian tubes and lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which may result in permanent damage to your reproductive organs.

Chlamydia is a common STD but easily treated. For confidential and nonjudgmental testing, call Rebirth OB/GYN today or request an appointment online.
