Hirsutism

This is a condition that results in excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male-like pattern on your face, back, and chest. It affects 5-10% of women and people assigned female at birth. It is typically a symptom of other conditions such as PCOS and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, can happen after menopause, or can depend on your cultural heritage. It can affect you psychosocially and psychologically, and you may experience stress, anxiety, and depression.

Hirsutism can develop because of virilization due to high androgen levels. You can also experience symptoms such as a deeper voice, increased muscle development, clitoris enlargement, and acne. This can be due to Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia or ovarian or adrenal tumors that produce androgen. Medications such as anabolic steroids, testosterone, minoxidil, and phenytoin can also cause hirsutism. We can do lab tests and sometimes an ultrasound to help find a cause of hirsutism.

Treatment options include hormone therapy (OCPs), androgen suppressing medications (spironolactone), low-dose steroids, insulin-lowering medications (metformin), eflornithine skin cream (Vaniqa). Permanent hair removal options are electrolysis and laser hair removal. At Rebirth Health Center, we offer electrolysis permanent hair removal. Temporary hair removal options are shaving, bleaching, and waxing.
